What is an E-Cig?
An Electronic cigarette (e-cig) is a portable, battery-powered device (often shaped like a traditional cigarette) that closely simulates smoking by vaporizing eLiquid (containing PG and/or VG), flavor and still delivers nicotine (nicotine levels can vary, down to 0 mg, at the users discretion). It generates a smoke-like vapor and provides the same hand-to-mouth, inhalation experience as smoking. It has been shown to reduce cravings among smokers, not just for nicotine, but also for the relaxation associated with inhaling and exhaling vapor. It is free of harmful tar, carcinogenic substances and combustion gases present in regular cigarettes.
It was invented only 8 years ago in China by Inventor Hon Lik of Ruyan and has quickly spread throughout the world, growing in popularity.
What are the benefits of using e-cigs vs. smoking cigarettes?
The electronic cigarette has no tar, no tobacco, no smell, no secondhand smoke and none of the 4,000+ carcinogens you’ll find in a tobacco cigarette. It wont stain your teeth or cause premature wrinkles. The cost is much lower than traditional cigarettes and they can usually be used in non-smoking areas.
Are electronic cigarettes safe and what is in them?
The e-cigarette itself (i.e., the hardware) is neither healthy nor unhealthy; it is merely an electronic device for vaporizing the liquid put in it. The liquid used in an e-cigarette contains:
- USP-grade PG (Propylene Glycol) used in food flavorings, cosmetics, asthma inhalers, and the artificial smoke at rock concerts. NOTE: Some people are allergic to PG (e.g., a rash or sore throat, but usually nothing serious). If one has a situation like this, they may use and/or…
- USP-grade VG (Vegetable Glycerin), along with a selectable amount of nicotine (derived from tobacco)., plus flavoring (derived from different types of tobacco and or food/candy flavorings). more syrupy, and derived from veggies.
The American Association of Public Health Physicians has come out in support of electronic cigarettes. The AAPHP recommends that the FDA reclassify the electronic cigarette as a tobacco product (as opposed to a drug/device combination) and believes that the effects of second-hand smoke will be significantly decreased using electronic cigarettes. There has recently been a research study performed on the Comparison of the effects of e-cigarette vapor and cigarette smoke on indoor air quality here: http://informahealthcare.com/doi/abs/10.3109/08958378.2012.724728
Health New Zealand founder, Murray Laugesen, New Zealands foremost expert on the electronic cigarettes, found the electronic cigarettes are far safer than regular smoking materials. He states: Nicotine is one of the safest of drugs, and is being sold as the alternative to most dangerous consumer product the tobacco cigarette. Low risk compared to cigarettes is the real world risk that smokers face.
Terms you will hear that you should know:
Analog – Slang term for a traditional cigarette.
Atomizer (or atty) – The heating element on an e-cigarette, the part that vaporizes the eJuice.
Automatic Battery – A style of electronic cigarette that does not use a button to activate the heating element. This style of battery is most similar to smoking an analog.
Battery – The battery is the part of the eCig that provides power to the heating element.
Cartridge (or cart) – A plastic tube that is generally filled with absorbent filler material that holds eLiquid.
Cartomizer (or carto) – A cartridge and atomizer in a single unit. These are typically inexpensive and disposable.
Clearomizer (or clearo) – A tank that uses wicks and a heating element rather than filler material.
Drip Tip – An accessory that can be used in conjunction with an atomizer or cartomizer. Drip tips are typically used for looks or added comfort.
Flooding – This can occur when too much eJuice is applied to the atomizer or heating element. Heating elements require air to properly vaporize liquids, and adding too much eJuice will cause a decrease in vapor production and flavor.
Juice – eLiquid, eJuice. This is the liquid that is vaporized when using an electronic cigarette.
Manual – A style of electronic cigarette that has a button which activates the heating element.
Mod – Typically refers to devices that use larger lithium ion batteries and have variable voltage and/or wattage options.
Throat Hit – The tingling sensation that a user gets in the back of the throat when vaporizing eJuice that contains nicotine.
Vaping – The action of “smoking” an electronic cigarette.
